The total population of Guwahati is expected to be more than a million by the year 2010. A lot of people from neighboring towns, even from other states, have set up businesses and residences in the city. This has further increased the prices of real estate and property in Guwahati.

Guwahati has zonal headquarters of several institutions including several banks. High end real estate is in great demand as a lot of multi-national companies, organized retail businesses are setting up offices and shops in the city. Like many other cities of India, modern shopping complexes, multiplexes, etc are being built in key locations of the city, such as along G.S.Road.
